El Chapo and ex-Mexican government official charged with firearms trafficking
Mexican prosecutors recently announced that a group of seven people, including Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman and the former Mexican security minister, have been charged for firearm trafficking as part of the “Fast and Furious” gun-running investigation.
The operation was lead by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, who was able to track over 2,000 weapons from the location of purchase all the way into the hands of prominent cartel soldiers across the US-Mexico border.

Some of these weapons, according to the NY Post, were used in murders. Two “Fast and Furious” weapons were traced to the murder scene of Brian Terry, a former border patrol official.
Ex-Security Minister Genaro Garcia Luna, alongside federal police agent Luis Cardenas Palomino, were charged with gun-running and weapons trafficking.
Guzman was also among the group who was charged. The former alleged Sinaloa cartel leader is currently serving a life sentence at the ADX Supermax prison in Colorado. Luna and Palomino are also currently in custody.
Luna was arrested back in 2019 in Texas, and previously served as a figurehead in the Mexican government under President Felipe Calderon. The Calderon administration focused on combating organized crime throughout Mexico.
Palomino, who served under Luna, was taken into custody in July.
