Domenico Trimboli a powerful captain in the Calabrian Mafia also known as the Ndrangheta has been arrested in Colombia.
He is known as a top drug trafficker for the Ndrangheta and leads a big part of the organization’s international drug trade. Italian authorities claimed that Trimboli arranged cocaine shipments of up to two and three thousand kilos being sent to Europe and Italy. Anti-mafia prosecutors said he was held in great prestige among Colombian criminals and was the best-known broker in the cocaine business never skipping a payment to cartel suppliers of the product. Trimboli now faces up to twelve years in prison on drug charges once he is extradited from Colombia back to Italy.

While the operation to capture Trimboli was ongoing an associate of his Luigi Barbara was arrested in Miami , Florida. He is accused of trying to smuggle 700 kilos of cocaine into the United States using a sailboat. This is one of many links showing how the Calabrian mafia continues to spread into other countries including the United States. The Ndrangheta has become the richest mafia organization in Italy mainly due to its control of the cocaine trade across Europe. It has now spread from its base in Calabria into not only the U.S. but also into Australia and Canada.
