The movie is about a man (an actor has yet to be cast for this role) who falls under the control of a notorious mobster (played by Russel Crowe) while in prison. This man ends up building a multiracial criminal organization, taking down his mentor, and him and his crew becoming made men inside the Italian and Russian mafias.

The original movie, “A Prophet” was directed by Jacques Audiard and is about an Arab man (Tahar Rahim) who is sent to a French prison, eventually becoming a mafia kingpin. The movie was the winner of the Cannes Film Festival Grand Prix in 2009 and was nominated for best foreign-language film at the 2010 Oscars.

Originally a Sony Pictures movie, they retitled it “American Son” and Paramount has said this project is a major priority for them.
