Gianni Nicchi was sentenced to ten years in prison Wednesday in Palermo.
The 31-year-old Nicchi is a boss in the Sicilian mafia also known as Cosa Nostra and was dubbed the boy wonder of the Sicilian mafia. He climbed through mob ranks quickly after the arrest of Salvatore Lo Piccolo then the “boss of bosses” in Cosa Nostra. Nicchi was nabbed back in 2009 and now the up and coming mob boss will be off the streets for the next decade. Along with Nicchi, 25 other mobsters were also sentenced to spend almost 200 years behind bars.

This marks a major take down of another top Italian mafia figure by Italian authorities as their assault on the mafia across the country continues. Authorities have been much more effective over last few years at targeting mafia finances along with its heirarchy bringing more and more mob cases to trial ending with successful convictions. The take down of Nicchi one of the mobs rising stars is yet another victory for law enforcement.
