59 Italian Mafia Members Arrested in Messina

Anti-mafia investigators have arrested 59 suspected mafia members directed mainly at a group in the Sicilian province of Messina, according to a statement by the Carabinieri.

ROME (28th February 2020) – The Carabinieri have released a statement that on Friday they arrested 59 people suspected of Mafia activities in the province of Messina in Sicily.

The statement says “The operation, dubbed ‘Dinastia’ (Dynasty) was conducted by DDA anti-mafia investigators as an investigation into the mafia clan from the city of Barcellona-Pozzo di Gotto, which is historically linked to the ‘Cosa Nostra‘ from Palermo,”

The large scale operation on Friday morning was carried out by the special forces of the Carabinieri in the Messina and other regions of Italy.

The 59 arrested suspects are accused of involvement in many different mafia activities including drug smuggling, racketeering, illegal possession of weapons and other serious crimes.

Local media reports are saying that sons of the historical mafia leaders of the region led the group. The Godfathers of the region are currently serving prison sentences.
