Francesco Palmeri from the Gambino crime family is now being extradited to Italy to face multiple charges including extortion.
Palmeri was one of eight people arrested last year in New York and Italy for trying to extort more than $1 million dollars from a business owner in Southern Italy. According to court records, the Gambino family sent the mobster to Italy in July 2013 with “a message from America…the businessman is going to understand”. He was accompanied by members associated with the New York Mafia and mob families in Italy.

Palmeri was born in Sicily but became a U.S. Citizen last year and is believed to be a high ranking member of the Gambino family. Known as “Ciccio l’americano” or the chubby American some reports have ranked him as the Gambino family underboss along with consigliere although his official part and rank within the family is unconfirmed. His arrest was a follow up to operation “New Bridge” which investigators claim showed existing links between the American Mafia and the mafia families it Italy.

I have seen him mentioned as underboss and consigliere in some previous reports as well. Most like media hype trying to add to his relevance for purpose of the news report. Cali seems to have been identified and established for most part as underboss for some time now but still Pal has been mentioned in that seat as well along the way.

Not doubting the vetting that goes on before one is able to become a US citizen, but how did a known mobster become one? Also, is the Gambino Family short of men, since I thought Under Boss and Consiglior were two different position or were the consolidated b/c he’s the best person for both.

I know people will disagree with my next statement but i am going to say it the gap between the genovese and gamino familys is closing. The Genovese and Gambinio are nearly equal if not already equal on blue collar crime but the If it wasn’t for the Jersey Waterfront and the Laborers, I’d probably call it a draw both familys have stable leaderships now and the gotti supporters are all out of power, dead or in prison
The Chubby American?? Do they just make stuff up or what?? Ciccio l’americano doesn’t mean the chubby american! Ciccio is a common nickname for people named Francesco (Frank). So his nickname simply means “Frank the American”. How they got chubby from that I have no idea. It’s just stupid and made up.
