The Genovese crime family often referred to as the Ivy League of organized crime has been one of the more low key New York mafia families for decades. Who exactly has been in control of the Cosa Nostra powerhouse has been a topic of debate for some time.
According to multiple sources quoted by Jerry Capeci and ganglandnews, including those in law enforcement circles Liborio “Barney” Bellomo is allegedly the current Genovese family boss. The 59 year old mobster has been calling the shots and sitting atop the ranks of the family very quietly for the last few years according to reports. Bellomo has been a powerful member of he family for years and was appointed as acting boss in the late 1980’s by then boss Vincent Gigante.
“Barney Bellomo“
According to the report Bellomo learned a lot from former boss Gigante and is using a street boss to relay orders to the family’s capos and soldiers. Long time capo Peter “Petey Red” DiChiara now allegedly serves as the families “street boss” or in somewhat of an acting boss capacity for Bellomo. The infamous Gigante used a similar arrangement years ago in his heyday electing Fat Tony Salerno to serve as an upfront boss helping to keep him under law enforcement’s radar. But one source claimed it was clear Bellomo was the boss and it was one reason why mobsters from both the Bronx and Brooklyn have been making their way to a social club owned by Petey Red in lower Manhattan.
Bellomo has been on the feds radar for years and his seven year reign as acting boss for Gigante from 1989-96 ended in an indictment. He was sent to prison for 12 years after copping a plea on two racketeering indictments in which he was accused or ordering multiple mob hits. He was able to skate around the murder charges by pleading guilty to extortion and served his time from 1996 to 2008. He has been extremely low key and squeaky clean since his 2008 release, which included three years of supervised release. But law enforcement sources claim even though it hasn’t been proven that he has committed a crime since then there is no doubt he is the Genovese family boss.

read this in gangland today very interesting
i did not think he was the official boss i thought he was part of a ruling panel. This is big news guys in 2014 the feds said it was still a ruling panel this is the first time since the chin gigante that there is a official boss in this family
I really didn’t think the family had an “official” boss for last couple years either but i guess he has the pedigree and the standing with in the family to def sit at the head of the table.
i am surprised he wants to be the number 1 guy he is worth millions in legit business i mean he gets rental income every month from numerous apartment buildings worth millions of dollars that he owns in the Bronx and northern suburbs and he has his Miami Beach condo on Collins Avenue.
Bellomo also has financial interests in construction companies that he uses to repair and refurbish rundown apartment buildings he buys, plus that mansion he lives in
Wow about time there is a name out there. This family still surprises me with how well they keep under the radar. It’s the one family I am most interested in learning about but it’s hard to get information on them.
Yes they have really kept the hierarchy under lock and key for years now and had many it seems including law enforcement guessing as to who was in those leadership roles. Very tough to do these days.
Very low key family old school not out in the open though i will say this barney lives very well

how do you know he has a place on Collins Ave that’s kinda creepy lol
firstly gangland capecis site says he has his Miami Beach condo on Collins Avenue.
secondly i knew this long before jerry reported on it is common knowledge that this guy owns a condo in miami beach for a number of years
every one has a place on Collins Ave.
You really need to stop stealing other people’s work and pretending you wrote it. This info comes from Jerry Capeci not this joker folks. You could at least accredit Capeci with the info man.
Credit has been added to Mr Capeci and his site and article writer has been made aware of the over site. Thanks for the contribution.
Thanks for heavily editing my comments, you suck man
Your point was made and action taken was no need to be rude about it etc. Comment was edited as to guidelines. Again thanks for your contribution.
You guys are always making out like you get the big scoops when you are piggy backing the work of real journalists. Every reason to be rude, you guys do it all the time. Capeci should sue your ass for plagiarism
look dont come here trying to cause trouble
i dont think you understand how this site works this site simply relays other mob reports to everyone. It always says who they got the information from if it is capeci or if its scotty B
Some people dont know where to look for mob info some dont pay for gangland so there is no one where for them to read mob news or like myself they come here for discussion
i have been reading gangland for years a very long time and i still come here so i can chat about the mob
Cause trouble? This site never accredits the original writers and the fact the writer hides his real name is very revealing.
It says capeci name in the article and if the news comes from Scott burn he always includes a link to gangstereport
The guy who writes this is not a mob journalists nor does he seem himself as one he simply relays messages to people who don’t know where to look to find mob news he never copy’s word for word
Lol, ,” don’t come here trying to cause trouble “. Well said ,TM.This sites got the best discussion. As for Bellomo, he’s probably stepping up out of sense of duty. Tough job but somebody gotta do it. You gotta respect the guys who take the oath seriously.
your right he is probably doing it because since the late 80s after sammy black died he has been the protgee of the chin he has been schooled for years to be boss he is out of the can off parole now he is able to run the family
there is alot of heavy guys who could have been boss or had the repsect to be one of the leaders throughout history the smart ones stay in the shadows the ones who take the big seat get done. Barney does not need the job he is multimillionaire and his family have been through enough his wife dying him spending all those years in prison but like you said he is obviously a true believer in the life and you cant help but respect that
danny Leo is a example i always use was in the shadows never did time was never known by anyone out of east harlem was rich no one was looking at him takes the big seat in 2005 within three years he is in the can should have stayed a skipper
guys like Joseph Arcuri stayed in the shadows never doing time i am sure there is skippers today who have never done time i am postive. No one even knew danny leo existed till he became boss
which btw Capeci does have a reputation for so I’d tread more carefully in future.
People hve spectaculated 4 yrs tht bellomo was boss of the genovese family, It shouldn’t be 2 much of surprise. However it is surprise tht the Chin selected an Bronx faction member to run the family as actng don. History of tht family power has been Manhattan, east Harlem & in Brooklyn. But bellomo is a guy tht will continue to hold the real
value of LCN…ijs
The power has been in the Bronx good 20 years Danny Leo he was not Bronx guy but he had close ties to the Bronx Bronx factions were backing him
I have believed this for a long while. I do remember several telling me I was wrong, as he was supposedly on the sidelines. It’s always made the most sense for me. Extensive life in Cosa Nostra, hand picked, groomed by Gigante. I believe he was a captain or acting by 25, or something incredibly young. Seems like a smart guy, low key, outstanding insulation.
your right i dident think he was boss i thought he was part of a ruling panel of leaders that is what they had been using since the 90s so this is a big change. I thought after his wife died he started taking step back he became less visible but i guess that was his own thinking not stepping back. Sad though his family are good people he will end up in the can again as boss.
he was not groomed by gigante though his father was a made guy who was dying he said to tony salerno took look after barney as he was only 20 years old no one backing him on the streets. Tony gave him his button in 1979 he was only 21 years old. He then started working with sammy black who was a real power in that family when sammy black died in 1989. Barney was the young wonder kid back then late 20s and telling guys in there 70s what to do he is not a young man anymore though 59 now still perfect age too take over a family
Gigante groomed him in the 80’s and 90’s, as he was street boss by 96. Gigante’s intentions, I believe, were for Bellomo to take over one day. He did come from 116th crew, which was Salerno’s before, so clearly influence came from that direction as well.
true the chin was not his personal mentor though. Barney was street boss by 96 that is correct when he first got his stripes in the late 80s it caused a real stir up
his father was dying asked salerno to back him salerno was his best friend salerno made him out of respect for his old man
sammy blacks influence was massive he was the number two to chin for awhile sammy black introduced him to the chin. The chin saw him as a protgee but he would have neve got there without sammy black. Sammy black died in 1989 barney took over everything he had the chin knew he was smart and efficent
research sammy black he is a really interesting character there is little known about him but he was a real gangster
116 street… The pleasant avenue crew..
In the movie carlitos way they mentioned the guys from pleasant Ave … Italian Harlem… Moons ago.
Yes, he was made in his 20’s and a young skipper in Jimmy Ida’s crew he was upset because of rules . Rule’s are Rules .
I feel very upset that many good guy’s with beutiful families are never coming home ,but then again this is the life chosen . Barny and I we went to court together ,the horror of MCC in 1997. They politely expect people to take millions of years like nothing , was so shocking !
