Montreal Mafia linked businessman Tony Magi murdered

Montreal Construction entrepreneur Tony Magi was found shot to death at a construction site on Beaconsfield Street in Notre-Dame-de-Grâce.

He was shot several times in the head and upper body according to reports. Magi has long-standing ties to the Rizzuto crime family and was once partners with Vito Rizzuto and his son Nick Rizzuto Jr. Financial troubles in the early 2000s opened the door for Vito to step in and become associated with Magi. After helping to secure financing for some of Magi’s projects he directed his son Nick to work alongside the developer in a company called FTM Construction.

“Tony Magi”

Back in 2008 Magi was shot several times while in his car but somehow survived the murder attempt. Then in 2009, Nicolo Rizzuto Jr. was murdered right outside the offices of FTM Construction while Vito was serving time in the states. During investigations into the death of Rizzuto, both Magi’s name and that of gang leader Ducarme Joseph were present according to police. Magi had hired Joseph as a bodyguard for his protection after the previous attempt on his life. There were reports that Joseph and some of his men were present on the murder scenes of both Rizzuto and Federico Del Peschio another of Nick’s business associates killed in 2009.

In 2010 Magi could be seen riding in an armored SUV and was often surrounded by bodyguards. He seemingly knew he was a marked man and now on the wrong side of the mafia. He would eventually survive at least two more attempts on his life. The Sicilian clan that had dominated the Montreal Mafia for several years were in the middle of a bloody Montreal Mafia war and had lost several high ranking mobsters. Then came the death longtime godfather Vito Rizzuto in 2013 weakening the family even further. But that didn’t seem to stop those that remained from seeking revenge on behalf of Vito and his family by striking back at their enemies.

Ducarme Joseph was killed in 2014 and there are still questions that remain as to the who and why. These same questions are sure to surface during the SPVM Major Crime Units investigation into Magi’s death. Was he still a Rizzuto family guy? Could this be a settling of accounts or even an attempt at consolidation of power by the Hamilton-based Ndrangheta or Calabrian mafia and other enemies which many believe were behind the attacks on the Rizzuto family? Or could the death of Joseph and Magi be at the hands of the remaining Rizzuto clan members as revenge on behalf of their former godfather for their possible roles in the murder of Nick Rizzuto?
