The Sicilian-based Rizzuto crime family continues to be dismantled as the body count rises in the ongoing Montreal mafia war.
There have been plenty of theories over the last few years as to who may be responsible for these attacks on the Rizzuto clan. But according to reports some mafia experts and police sources now both believe the Calabrian mafia or Ndrangheta who have long been rumored to have orchestrated things are to blame. The Calabrians were pushed out of Montreal in the late 1970s after losing an internal mob war to the Sicilian faction led by Nicolo Rizzuto. The Ndrangheta has since been confined to the Toronto area for the last 40 years but now seems poised to make a return to Montreal.
Recently murdered mobster Vincenzo Spagnolo was one of a shortlist of Rizzuto family members still being targeted by the Ndrangheta according to journal de Montreal sources. Mafia researcher and noted author Pierre De Champlain told the journal “It’s not just a matter of revenge of the Calabrian faction that is behind this recent months, but it is also a clear intention to eradicate the heads of the Sicilian faction of the Montreal Mafia.” Other sources familiar with the Montreal underworld believe more killings of those linked to the Rizzuto clan is almost certain as accounts are settled although the list of those to be eliminated has been dramatically shortened.
Captain Guy Lapointe of the Sûreté du Québec told the journal “For the moment, it is too early to advance a hypothesis rather than another because the investigation is just beginning.” But sources familiar with the matter claim there has been an increase of individuals from both Ontario and Hamilton linked to the Calabrian clan back in forth in Montreal recently and this is not by chance. It seems the Sicilian clan that consolidated its power in the 1990s under now deceased godfather Vito Rizzuto may be on its way out as a new era is ready to begin for the mafia in Montreal. Although for now authorities still consider Stefano Sollecito and Leonardo Rizzuto to be the current heads of the Montreal mafia it seems like when the dust finally settles new Calabrian leaders will be calling the shots.

It def seems like its not only rumors and conjecture anymore as it is becoming clear the Calabrian mafia is now getting its revenge on the Rizzuto clan for their rise in the 70s. What little is left of the Rizzuto family doesn’t seem to be able to mount any kind of resistance as they continue to get clipped one by one. Will be interesting to see the Cotroni/Violi crew moves back in to sit at head of the Montreal mafia table once things end.
I wonder who the new main Boss of the italian faction is since the passing of Bernardo Provenzano. But who ever it is he is sure make sure this canadian faction crew is taking over after vito rizzuto died.
From reports Matteo Messina Denaro is the new Cosa Nostra boss or one of the main bosses over in Sicily but they are definitely having problems of their own over there as Denaro is on the run and they have had a lot of heat of late from authorities. Not sure how much input or sway they have today over the Montreal scene and the Calabrian’s move against the Rizzuto’s as the Ndrangheta has become more powerful then the Sicilian mafia even in Italy.
Good read… But the bikers have a voice as well.. And their certified nuts! Hope the calabrians and the bikers hit it off fast.. If they haven’t done so yet.
There seems to be a possible alliance already being put into place by the hells angels and Calabrians .. http://imp.eyb.mybluehost.me/mafia/new-montreal-mafia-and-hells-angels-alliance-in-the-works
Its not he first time the Rizzutos were down what happened when vito came out of jail . He took over in no time . So lets wait and see money talks bullshit walks.
Vito was a one of a kind though and there lies the problem for the Rizzuto’s this time around. Not saying the fight is ready to be called just yet but they def seem to be on the standing 8 count and they def don’t have another Vito waiting in the wings to lead the family back to its glory days. Seems like a real tough road for them to survive this kind of attack.
Always wondered is Paolo Renda’s son(Charlie Renda) involved in the family business.
ONE would believe YES Eva. But good Q. … if so, we’ll see a newspaper article shortly 😉
Told ya here MONTHS and almost a year ago… the Name you NEVER hear associated with Ndrangeta or Calabrian faction will be running all of Canada now. That’s C.C. … Outta Ontario.
And yes his ties with Bikers has always been strong.
Maybe not as cozy as the Sicilians were with them in QBC. That may never be matched.
JohnGrant stated correctly. Vito is unmatched, when he came out, Had he have lived an extra 3-4 years, The landscape may look very differently, But to expect ANY one in that Family to duplicate his magic, without his father Nicolos old connects, is insanity.
Some things can’t be taught. I myself am quite surprised that he was SO successful when he was released.
It was insane what had been lost.
