The mafia around the country as a whole has been in a state of decline for some time now as its power and influence diminishes.
The five families of the New York mafia remain the most powerful mob families in the country some of which have seen a rejuvenation of sorts the past couple of years. Although the American Mafia may never reach the heights of its heyday again some of the New York families have been able to reorganize of late due to many factors, including diminished efforts from law enforcement as the anti-terrorism fight took center stage. Question is can the mob families in Philadelphia and New England which have fallen on hard times in last few years find some of the same success as we head into 2016.
Philadelphia Mafia
“Joey Merlino“
The Philadelphia mafia has definitely been one of the more interesting mob families over the last couple of decades and has sustained its share of setbacks. A major trial targeting the Philly mafia leadership this year led to convictions of some of the family’s hierarchy once again leading to a state of unrest. The release of some key figures from prison of late has led to the family having more made guys on the streets as it had in years although this has led to more questions then answers as to the current state of the Philly mob family and its future. Recently released made guys include Joseph “Chickie” Ciancaglini, Gaeton Lucibello, Marty Angelina, Michael “Mikey Lance” Lancellotti, and George Borgesi.
There seems to now be three factions operating with in the Philly mafia, including one believed to be led by current acting boss Steven Mazzone and alleged boss Joey Merlino, another led by veteran Scarfo era mobster Phil Narducci, along with another by fellow Scarfo era mobster Joseph “Joey Punge” Pungitore. With the influx of veteran made guys back on the streets and settling in many wonder if the mafia in Philadelphia can find harmony among these internal factions. If they can find a way to make things work peacefully the Philly mob may actually be in a position to re-establish itself and recapture some of its dwindling influence heading into 2016.
New England Mafia
“Carmen DiNunzio“
Few mafia families have seen its ranks decimated more and taken more setbacks over the last few years than the New England mob. The Patriarca crime family has seen its long time power base in Providence virtually dismantled in the last couple of years leading to a shift in power back to the Boston based faction. Convictions of high ranking members, including alleged one time acting boss Anthony DiNunzio and powerful captains Edward “Eddie” Lato and Frank “Bobo” Marrapese continued to diminish the ranks. The indictment of newly installed alleged acting boss Anthony Spagnolo left the New England mob in disarray heading into 2015. The mafia in New England has quietly been trying to pick up the pieces and recover from damage done by law enforcement over the past year.
Heading into 2016 the family has seen the return of powerful captain Matthew “Matty” Guglielmetti and alleged under boss Carmen “The Cheeseman”DiNunzio among others. Carmen and his brother Anthony are both believed to be key players in the Patriarca family hierarchy moving forward. It’s unclear as to who the current boss of the family is heading into 2016 but its believed that The Cheeseman is likely to have taken the reigns upon his release earlier this year. With Carmen back on streets and the Boston faction almost intact, along with powerful captains like Guglielmetti returning the New England mafia may be able to reorganize and begin to re-establish itself to an extent.

Has to be Philly right ? I mean i know some people don’t think Providence is as bad off as it seems and that the Boston faction has some key players but i think there is much more potential in Philly and the family there then in New England. Things still seem to be more unorganized in New England then in Philly even with the various factions forming over there.
Is there anyway it can be both? Both families have had key players get back on the streets. With local gangs, terrorism, and drug trafficking amongst local gangs I think both families can make a comeback.
I think its possible for both families to make some headway and make somewhat of a comeback. Although i think its more likely to be Philly over New England as to who is more effective doing so. Unless Philly keeps to tradition and violence breaks out between the factions then its going to be a real mess.
How many made members do each family have?
New england mob has 30 made guys in boston and had 20 made guys in rhoden island but recent indicments and death among members its said to have between 5-10 made guys but there is alot of assoicates
philly mob from the chart i posted awhile back (not written by me) had 30+ plus made guys i think it was around 32 33
Yes seems New England with between 30-40 made guys and Philly between 25-35 seems to be range that had been tossed around last couple years.
i disagree john i think New England mob are a long way ahead rackets wise. I mean look at the last indicment in philly guys got busted for low scale gambling and loansharking and a large poker machine racket that is what the philly mob has become. Plus they have joey merlino in charge there an indicment waiting to happen. Though they do have a good amount of guys on the streets alot of its broken up into factions
new England mob in boston carmine is a major power he is the top guy even if he is not in name two of his guys got there button a few months ago things are defo looking good for him. Spagnelo is still out on bail and what i am hearing one of the witness has bailed has a decent chance at beating the case. You have anthony parillo he is in his early 60s a powerful capo might even be consglierie. Peter is getting old though dont have long left not in the best of health. Anthony is out next year the whole gang is going to be out of prison i mean those late 2000s they were hit hard by bobby deluca flipping and the wiretaps. You have louie DiNizuio rising fast. Carmine is the street boss though he is on parole so he is careful i think when he gets of he will step up and take things over
then you have matty g in rhoden island and joe ruggerio two capos running things out there. Ruggerio has tens of millions never even been convicted
I agree as to the New England family having more opportunity to earn and having access to bigger rackets. Although i think the chance of things falling apart in New England seems to be a tad higher as law enforcement there still really has a hard on for the Patriarca family. Where as in Philly i think all eyes are on Joey taking the spot light off everyone else and as long as they stay quiet and keep the violence down i think they can advance more in 2016 then New England can. I just think New England has a bit harder time in 2016 staying off the fed radar and a new set of indictments next year wouldn’t shock me at all.
true i think the New england mob has bigger rackets i mean a few years ago there was an indictment with ther involvement in a union that got busted and last year some guys were arrested for secretly controlling a casino.
But your right philly does have potenita though joeys top guys are very loyal will be hard to get them
where is the decavacte family and the outfit and the detroit mob ?
you have missed out a few familys
I think Detroit and Chicago have been fairly stable last couple years and really not in a need to re-stablize mode at moment. But i could see a case for the DeCavalcante family being tossed into the mix here.
dont get me wrong i would not pick Detroit or Chicago Detroit though doing ok has downzied this year gone down to four capos its running out of guys 20 years from now they could be in real trouble
chicago are an indictment waiting to happen by the sounds of things from scotty Bs site its coming down before new years
DeCavalcante i would consider but prob not pick because that indicment though only one crew showed them to be a bit wild blowing guys up with grenades so i would be wary saying they are the biggest outside NY
Yes seems like the Verna crew is definitely in the crosshairs and if guys start to get pinched there it could lead to no telling how big of a mess in Chicago if thinks shake out for the feds.
Detroit just seems to stay under the radar consistently earning and making little to no noise like things were initially intended to work for the mob.
The outfit , decavalcante, patriarca , and Philly mobs are all still very active , u can tell this by the number of indictments that are brought against the families , size wise there in the second tier behind the 5 New York families with a membership range of 40-50 made guys . The Detroit mob is a little smaller with around 20-30 made guys . Then u have the rest who prob have some made guys left but are not considered a viably structured mob family like buffalo and Kansas
yearh thats what i would estimate the familys as
For all we know, there could have been an induction ceremony last night with 6 guys being made, I mean it’s a secret society after all..
But like Dom said, number of indictments does tell you something..
because its not a secret society anymore has not been four 30 years
we the public have a good idea of half the leaders that is wrong let alone the feds know everyone
in philly we knew about the latest induction cermonay months after it happened in 2011 sonny mazzone dom grande and servigo. In New England mob a few weeks after the two guys in boston got there button every one knew its ridiculous
with joey merlino in charge we can see who is who posts picutres everyday of him and his guys its crazy
Its definitely one of the better measuring sticks we have available along with other fed reports etc. Always a tough think to estimate numbers and usually all reports are more or less a ball park although some online can be much more exaggerated then others.
